Pakistan is the world's 6th most populous market that has registered an impressive economic recovery in the past few years and has joined the list of the rapidly developing nations of the world. Rapid population growth and an increase in economic activities are exerting pressure for improving the transport systems of the Country. The Government realizes the need of having solid infrastructure in the Country and aspires to develop a network of most modern infrastructure facilities, as inadequate transport facilities will threaten the economic development and affect the quality of life of the people. The Government has realized that the transportation needs of such a massive population cannot be overlooked and has initiated a number of mega development projects throughout the Country. Pakistan's recent infrastructure development programmes are reaching out to matchless heights as large amount of money is being spent on all such projects and they are backed by full-fledged support from the private sector.
Furthermore, Pakistan enjoys a vital geographical location on the world map as it is the junction between the eastern and the western states of Asia and will connect Afghanistan and Central Asian Republics with the rest of the world through the Gwadar Port. It would provide a shorter route to countries like China and Russia to easily access many states situated in the western part of the Asian Continent.

The development budget for 2007 – 2008 has been increased by 34.7%,. The
National Economic Council has approved a development programme of Rs 304
billion, which is the highest increase todate and is unparalleled in the 60 year history of Pakistan. Rs 92.2 billion is expected to be spent on infrastructure development alone so that inadequacies of infrastructure do not become a constraint in faster development. |
